The four members of the official delegation who were dispatched from Kahoku to the German sister city of Messkirch, officially reported their return to Mayor Waichiro Aburano in city hall and presented the framed photo that Mayor Arne Zwick had entrusted to them as a commemorative gift.

The four members were Deputy Mayor Tomoji Hasatani, City Council Chairman Koichi Yamada, Gen Okuma, curator of the Nishida Kitaro Museum of Philosophy, and Melanie Schulz, Coordinator for International Relations. The group around Deputy Mayor Hasatani explained about the warm welcome of the Messkirch people and the ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of philosopher Martin Heidegger's death.

The panel shows a back shot of Heidegger standing at the "path of philosophy" which extends from Messkirch Castle. The city will display the panel in the Heidegger corner of the Nishida Kitaro Museum of Philosophy.




2. The amicable exchange intensifies

The members of the official delegation that had visited the German sister city of Messkirch in Germany from May 24 to May 28 (four members including Deputy Mayor Tomoji Hasatani) reported their return to Mayor Waichiro Aburano in City Hall on May 30, 2006.

Besides Deputy Mayor Hasatani, the group consisted of City Council Chairman Koichi Yamada, Gen Okuma, the curator of the Ishikawa Nishida Kitaro Museum of Philosophy, and Melanie Schulz, Coordinator for International Relations (Germany). The group had visited Messkirch to attend the ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of  the death of philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889 - 1976), who was born in Messkirch, on May 26, 2006.

Deputy Mayor Hasatani said he gave a speech at the ceremony that was attended by 1,000 people including people related to Heidegger and philosophers from different countries, and that he felt he could promote Kahoku: "We received a cordial welcome by the citizens of Messkirch. I think that through our attendance the amicable exchange will further intensify." He also reported about the framed photograph of Heidegger presented by Messkirch.

Four members of Kahoku's Association for International Exchange came along on the visit at their own expense. They will make homestay with local families and deepen the exchange on the personal level before returning to Japan on June 1, 2006.

Meanwhile, the city is planning to dispatch 15 junior high school students from Kahoku to Messkirch for the purposes of language study and cross-cultural experience from July 3 to July 12, 2006.
